How did you get into Acupuncture?

Every day I am asked “how did you get into Acupuncture?”…. It was a personal journey that started when I was working at the Out Patient Physical Therapy Clinic at Dominican Hospital in Santa Cruz. I was prepping for my Master’s Degree in Physical Therapy at the time…I was a runner, kayak instructor, surfer, swimmer…very active and one day I injured my lower back and developed the most painful case of sciatica that literally was like the rug was pulled out from under me. Over night my life changed from being active and alive to hobbling around with sciatica and pain that would literally take me to my knees. I worked in the PT department as an aid so I was very aware of the PT protocol and had the top therapist work on me… The Western Doctors gave me pain medication that made me sick…. I went like this for almost a year…and felt like I was 23 years old going on 83….I lost my kayaking job because I could no longer sit in the kayak, I stopped long distance running, I was taking advil all day long and was quickly loosing faith in my chosen profession of PT. My life was at a turning point but I was not aware of this at the time as I was in so much pain. Needless to say, I finally tried Acupuncture. I had 6 sessions and I got my body back… my life back!!!! I felt so calm, so cared for…and the pain soon disappeared…. I knew this was what I was to do with my life so after prepping for PT school for 4 years….I changed my direction and entered the Master’s Degree Program in Traditional Chinese Medicine at Five Branches University in Santa Cruz. I am so blessed to have been healed by this medicine and to have a career that I absolutely LOVE. I can honestly say I am grateful for my Sciatica pain, even thought it was a pain in the butt, as it brought me to my life’s work.
